STACY JEWELL LEWIS was raised in the DC metropolitan area, and at the age of nineteen, she was abducted into the dark world of sex trafficking. When Stacy accepted a ride from an elderly grandpa, she had no idea he would hold her at gunpoint and bring her to a pimp who had paid the old man to kidnap her. She soon learned that the pimp had been following her for some time, and he had figured out her routine and her habits and, even worse, that she had a son. He used that information to capture her and hold her hostage for almost two years, threatening her life and the life of her son the whole time.
Manipulation and physical abuse kept her at his beck and call until one day she decided she would take no more. Stacy escaped “the life” right before her 21st birthday, through a series of dramatic and awe-inspiring events she has poetically described in her spoken word performance, “10 Years and 1 Day.”
Stacy’s powerful dramatizations have helped organizations such as the Department of Justice, Shared Hope International, The Araminta Freedom Initiative, and The Baltimore FBI Special Task Force to assist in the escape of many more survivors of sex trafficking like herself.
Stacy believes that though the experience of sex slavery can be brutal and disempowering, entertainment and media are powerful tools for creating public awareness. Better known as “Selah” in the spoken word community, Stacy works to achieve heightened community awareness through her bold words and heart-wrenching performances. Her painful but powerful story certainly ignites a call to action.
